Deputies of the Jogorku Kenesh have approved new surname writing options that align with national traditions. Now, citizens have the right to either keep Russian-style suffixes in their surnames or remove them.

According to the new law, suffixes -ov, -ev, -vich, -vna will remain, but those who wish can write their surnames in a national format.

From now on, a father’s name can be written as follows:

For boys — "uulu",

For girls — "kyzy",

Or the father’s name can be modified with possessive or ablative case endings.

Examples:

Instead of Baktybekova Uson Jakshilikovich, one can write Baktybek Uson Jakshilik uulu or simply Baktybek Uson.

Instead of Baktybekova Nurgul Jakshilikovna, one can write Baktybek Nurgul Jakshilik kyzy or simply Baktybek Nurgul.

These changes allow citizens to choose surnames that reflect national traditions.

For reference, this is similar to Uzbekistan’s practice of using "Rustam qizi" (Rustam’s daughter) or "Rustam o‘g‘li" (Rustam’s son).
