US President Joe Biden met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco, California. The talks took place on the sidelines of the APEC summit.
"As always, there is no substitute to face-to-face discussions. I’ve always found our discussions straightforward and frank," the White House chief said before the meeting.
Biden said Washington and Beijing must make sure rivalry does not lead to conflict. "And we also have to manage it responsibly — that competition," the US leader said.
The day before, the White House chief expressed hope that his meeting with the Chinese leader would be a step towards normalisation of relations between the two countries.
Normalisation, he said, involves "being able to pick up the phone and talk to one another if there’s a crisis. Being able to make sure our militaries still have contact with one another."
