Alexander Ovechkin has immortalized his name, becoming the best sniper in NHL history. His 895th goal surpassed a record held for more than three decades.

Ovechkin set a major NHL record
On the night of April 7, 2025, the Russian scored a goal against the Islanders and surpassed Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. The match was suspended to commemorate the moment: the entire team, Ovechkin's family, and Gretzky himself stepped onto the ice, congratulating the successor with dignity.

"They say records are made to beat them. But I'm not sure who can surpass this one," Gretzky said, extending a symbolic handshake and embrace to Ovechkin.

A storm of emotions erupted at the Washington Arena. Ovechkin addressed the fans:

"Without the team, the coaches, the fans, and my family, I wouldn't be standing here. We did it. Russians - we did it!"

In addition to the ceremony, Ovechkin's achievement was the culmination of his entire career, which began as a child in Moscow and went through Dynamo, Washington Capitals, Stanley Cup, numerous personal records, and the status of the highest-paid NHL player. His "office" in the left circle became legendary, and his style became a symbol of stability and power.

Ovechkin could have set a record a day earlier, but he refused to score against an empty net, deciding that this goal should be "real." The historic puck was dedicated to the deceased father of Alexander.

Despite injuries and criticism for his political views, Ovechkin remains an icon of world hockey. The league doesn't shy away from it - on the contrary, it honors and records the moment as part of the NHL's golden history.
