The escalation in Jammu and Kashmir has once again brought India and Pakistan to the brink of conflict - Islamabad has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, considering the situation a threat not only to regional but also to global security.
Pakistan has sent an official appeal to the UN Security Council requesting an emergency closed meeting, citing the sharp escalation of the situation in the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region and the escalating tensions in relations with India.
According to a written statement distributed by the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the UN, the current situation in the region poses a threat to peace and stability both at the regional and international levels.
"The escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan, as well as the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, threatens peace and stability in the region and beyond," the document states.
The UN Security Council meeting is scheduled for May 5th at 3:00 PM local time. Following its results, a briefing by Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftihar Ahmed, is expected.
