Following a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on 23 January, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki told reporters that sanctions should be imposed against Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"There must be limits to what Israel can do in Palestine. Impunity must end, there must be accountability, if it is necessary – why not sanctions? We call for the imposition of sanctions against Israel and against individuals, starting with Prime Minister Netanyahu," Riyad al-Maliki said.
He emphasises that in order to suspend hostilities, Israel must stop believing that it has the right to invade and destroy Palestinian territory. He also noted that he did not discuss with Lavrov Russia's actions to arrange negotiations between the Palestinians or contacts with Israel.
