Polish President Andrzej Duda has expressed doubts about Ukraine's ability to regain control of Crimea annexed by Russia in 2014.

His statements drew sharp criticism from members of the ruling coalition and led to a reaction from Ukraine's ambassador to Warsaw.

On Friday, the YouTube channel Kanal Zero published an interview with Andrzej Duda, in which the channel's presenters asked the head of state whether he believes in the possibility of Crimea returning to Ukrainian control. "It is hard for me to answer that question," Duda noted. - I don't know if Ukraine will regain Crimea, but I believe it will regain Donetsk and Luhansk."

The Polish president also emphasised that Crimea is "is a special place... also for historical reasons."

"In fact, if we look historically, it was in Russia's hands for most of the time," Duda added.
