President of Mongolia Visits Uzbekistan’s National Pavilion at COP17

President of Mongolia Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh visited Uzbekistan’s National Pavilion on the sidelines of the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17), being held in Ulaanbaatar from August 17 to 28. The visit took place as delegates discuss international measures to restore degraded land, strengthen drought resilience and mobilise financing.
The Mongolian President was accompanied by Aziz Abdukhakimov, Advisor to the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Environmental Issues and Chairman of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change.
During the visit, Khürelsükh was briefed on Uzbekistan’s ongoing environmental reforms. The sides exchanged views on environmental protection, climate change and further development of bilateral cooperation.
The Mongolian President highly commended Uzbekistan’s initiatives and its efforts to address environmental challenges. The sides also expressed readiness to further strengthen cooperation on environmental and climate-related issues.
Uzbekistan is actively presenting its environmental priorities at COP17. During the ministerial dialogue on innovative financing mechanisms for land restoration, the country highlighted the need to expand investment in efforts to combat land degradation, desertification and drought. According to the UNCCD, the annual financing gap for these areas is estimated at approximately $278 billion, while the economic cost of inaction is estimated at $878 billion per year.
COP17 is being held in Ulaanbaatar from August 17 to 28, bringing together governments, international organisations, businesses and civil society to advance action on land restoration, sustainable rangeland management, water resources and drought resilience.
