On the sidelines of the SCO summit in Astana, Vladimir Putin is meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, reports RIA Novosti.
The Russian leader proposed discussing the development of the North-South transport corridor. "I would like to highlight our plans in the field of infrastructure, and of course, the well-known North-South route is now at the forefront. I hope we can also say a few words about this," said Putin.
Aliyev, in turn, confirmed his strong commitment to expanding the project's infrastructure within Azerbaijan. "We are determined to expand the corridor's infrastructure on Azerbaijani territory. Although it physically exists, it does not yet meet the intentions of our partners and neighbours for the maximum utilization of this project," he explained.
The International North-South Transport Corridor is a multimodal route from St. Petersburg to the port of Mumbai, spanning 7,200 kilometers. The corridor includes three routes: the Trans-Caspian (utilizing railways and ports), as well as the western and eastern land routes.
Participants at the high-level meeting plan to sign a package of 24 joint documents and adopt a final declaration and statement.
