Record number of climbers die in 2023 on Mount Everest
It is noted that this season is a record for the number of deaths in all 70 years since the first ascent to the summit.

Almost half of the deaths were caused by acute mountain sickness: eight climbers died from it. The disease occurs because the air at high altitude has much less oxygen, which is necessary for the normal functioning of the human body.

Lack of oxygen causes swelling of the brain and lungs, hallucinations and rapid heartbeat. In addition, climbers experience considerable physical exertion during ascents and often suffer from dehydration. In some cases, all of these factors lead to a person's death.

In 70 years, 317 climbers have died on Everest. The previous deadliest year was 2014. At that time, 17 people died.
