Russia Confirms Support for Venezuela in Confrontation with the US
Russia has confirmed its diplomatic and political support for Venezuela amid a sharp escalation of tension by the United States. As reported by Venezuelan Foreign Minister Iván Gil, during a telephone conversation, his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow would provide Caracas with "comprehensive cooperation and support in countering the blockade," expressing full support for Venezuela's actions within the UN framework.

According to Gil, the ministers discussed the situation in the Caribbean Sea, where, in Caracas's opinion, the US is committing aggressive actions and gross violations of international law, including attacks on ships and "acts of piracy." Lavrov, for his part, called such actions unacceptable and expressed firm solidarity with the people of Venezuela.

The statement of support followed a series of tough steps and statements by the administration of Donald Trump. On December 17, the US declared the government of Nicolás Maduro a "foreign terrorist organization," imposed a complete blockade on oil tankers, and threatened the republic with an "unprecedented shock," demanding the return of "stolen" assets. Previously, Washington repeatedly used armed forces off the coast of Venezuela under the pretext of fighting drug trafficking, which Caracas viewed as a provocation.

Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova previously stated that Moscow is recording "deliberate escalation of tension" around Venezuela, which creates a threat to international shipping.
