A trilateral meeting of representatives of Russia, Ukraine, and Turkey is scheduled for May 16 in Istanbul. This is the first attempt at direct dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv in the last three years. However, the start of negotiations is accompanied by a tense diplomatic atmosphere.

According to a source in the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the Turkey-Russia-Ukraine format meeting will take place at 12:30 PM Moscow time at the Turkish president's office in Dolmabakhche. Before that, at 10:45, a separate meeting between the delegations of Turkey, the USA, and Ukraine is scheduled.

The Russian delegation arrived in Istanbul the day before and is awaiting the Ukrainian side from 10:00 AM. The head of the Russian delegation is headed by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky. The composition also includes Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, Chief of the General Staff, Igor Kostyukov, and Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin. The Ukrainian delegation is headed by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Security Service, and the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff.

The possibility of holding four-party negotiations with the participation of the US remains an open question.

Earlier, the meeting was supposed to take place on Thursday, but was postponed: Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with Turkish President Recep Erdogan in Ankara and only approved the delegation's composition in the evening. In Russia, Kyiv's actions were perceived as a delay in the process.
