Russia's Saint Petersburg airport has suspended flights to ensure security, according to aviation authorities. On January 4, Russia's Saint Petersburg Pulkovo Airport temporarily halted landings and departures of civilian aircraft from 7:45 AM (GMT 04:45) on Saturday to ensure flight safety, said Russia's aviation regulatory body Rosaviatsia. This was reported by Reuters.

The reasons for suspending flights were not specified, but Russian airports have previously been closed in the region due to the risk of strikes from Ukrainian drones.

The governor of Russia's northern Leningrad region, Aleksandr Drozdenko, said that Russian forces had shot down two drones near the Gulf of Luga in the Gulf of Finland.

"The airport is temporarily not accepting or sending flights," a Rosaviatsia representative wrote on Telegram. "Flight crews, air traffic control bodies, and airport services are taking all necessary measures to ensure flight safety — this is the top priority."
