Samarkand hosts chess tournament with a prize fund of $855 thousand

Today, one of the largest tournaments in the world of chess - "Grand Swiss 2025" - begins at the Silk Road Samarkand tourist complex. 172 chess players from 39 countries, including the world's strongest grandmasters, will participate in the competition.
The tournament will last until September 15th and will determine two participants for the men's and women's 2026 World Championship Candidates Tournaments. The total prize fund will be 855 thousand dollars: 625 thousand for men and 230 thousand for women.
Among the favorites are Indian talent Rameshbabu Praggnandha and Uzbekistan's young stars: Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Javohir Sindorov, Nodirbek Yoqubboyev, as well as representatives of the women's national team Gulruhbegim Tohirjonova, Guldona Karimova, Umida Omonova and others.
For Samarkand, holding such a large-scale tournament was not only a sporting event but also an important step in promoting the city as a center of international intellectual competitions.
