Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) claimed that Ukrainian underwater drones known as Sub Sea Baby detonated a Russian Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine of the Varshavyanka class (NATO designation: Kilo) while it was stationed at the port of Novorossiysk.

SBU Claims Russian Submarine Was Damaged in Novorossiysk
According to the SBU, the explosion caused critical damage to the submarine, effectively putting it out of operation. The agency released a video that it says shows the moment of the blast in the port area. The statement also noted that the submarine was equipped with four launchers for Kalibr cruise missiles, which Russia uses in strikes against Ukraine. The cost of a Varshavyanka-class submarine was estimated by the SBU at around $400 million.

Russia’s Black Sea Fleet responded by saying that the attempted sabotage failed to achieve its objectives. The Russian Ministry of Defense has not officially commented on the SBU’s claims.

There has been no independent confirmation of the alleged submarine attack in Novorossiysk so far.

Previously, Ukrainian drones have repeatedly targeted facilities in the port of Novorossiysk, including oil terminals. Reports also mentioned damage to residential buildings and the office of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium. Novorossiysk hosts one of the bases of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.
