SCO Strengthens Its Position: The “China – Kyrgyzstan – Uzbekistan” Megaproject Reshapes Regional Logistics

The SCO is stepping into a new phase: nearly one-third of global GDP, the Year of Sustainable Development, and the launch of the strategic “China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan” railway, expected to accelerate trade flows between China and Europe and create a new source of long-term income for the region.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation continues to strengthen its economic and political presence across Eurasia. According to SCO Deputy Secretary-General T.R. Midhun, member states account for 30–35% of global GDP and 42% of the world’s population. A large share of the population is youth, and the countries of the organization are becoming “engines of growth” through large-scale infrastructure initiatives. Midhun stressed that SCO expansion is “not an end in itself but a process” aimed at boosting regional cooperation.
SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev reminded that 2025 has been declared the SCO Year of Sustainable Development. At the forum in Moscow, participants discussed environmental issues, rational use of natural resources, poverty reduction, healthcare, and improving living standards. Delegations also reported on progress toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reviewed Russia’s proposal to establish an SCO Council on Sustainable Development.
A transformative regional project — the “China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan” railway — is now moving forward. According to Kyrgyz First Deputy Minister of Economy Choro Seitov, the new route will reduce shipping time from China to Europe by 3–7 days, significantly improving logistics. Construction has already started, and the railway is expected to launch in 2030. The Kyrgyz presidential administration calls the project strategic: once operational, it could bring the country over $500 million annually, creating a stable, long-term revenue stream.
