“Small agreements” possible between Trump and Kim Jong Un
World
South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS) has indicated the possibility of direct talks between Trump and Kim Jong Un, which could lead to “small agreements” on North Korea’s nuclear program.
According to NIS, the U.S., realizing the short-term improbability of achieving full denuclearization of North Korea, may propose arms control or partial disarmament agreements. Trump’s meetings with Kim, including the 2019 Vietnam summit, are regarded as significant achievements of his foreign policy.
Recently, Trump appointed Richard Grenell, a known advocate for dialogue with North Korea, as Special Envoy for Special Missions. Additionally, Alex Wong, who participated in working-level talks with North Korea during Trump’s first term, was appointed Deputy National Security Advisor. These appointments suggest a greater likelihood of renewed dialogue with North Korea.
North Korea-Russia Relations. NIS reports that North Korea might increase military support for Russia in the Ukraine conflict. A potential visit by Kim Jong Un to Russia in early 2025 is also being monitored.
Missile Tests and Strategic Signals. North Korea’s recent test of a hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) is believed to be aimed at drawing Trump’s attention and showcasing its missile program’s capabilities.
