Spectacular Asteroid Event Over the Philippines

World

On the night of September 5, residents of Luzon Island in the Philippines witnessed the spectacular sight of an asteroid streaking across the sky with a bright blue tail. The asteroid, estimated to be between one and three meters in diameter, posed no threat to Earth, as most of it burned up in the atmosphere at altitudes between 50 and 100 kilometers.

Astronomers at Arizona’s Mount Lemmon Observatory named the space rock 2024 RW1. The event was especially remarkable because the asteroid was detected just hours before it entered Earth's atmosphere, a rare occurrence that has only happened nine times since 2008.

As it entered the atmosphere, the asteroid created a plasma cloud shining at a brightness of –13 magnitude, comparable to the full Moon. This incredible display could potentially be seen up to 700 kilometers away from the Philippines.

For the locals and nearby observers, this event became an unforgettable cosmic spectacle.
