Syria is set to hold its first parliamentary elections since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. According to Muhammad Taha al-Ahmed, head of the Supreme Electoral Commission, the vote for the People's Assembly will take place from September 15 to 20, as reported by state agency SANA.

The new parliament will expand to 210 seats, including 70 members appointed directly by the president. The remaining seats will be allocated among Syria’s 14 provinces based on the 2011 census. Al-Ahmed stated that the election process will be conducted under the supervision of international observers.

Following the decree on a temporary electoral system, subcommittees will be formed within one week, which will then establish the election commission within 15 days. Candidate registration will begin immediately afterward.

The reforms also include a requirement for at least 20% female representation in electoral bodies.
