As a result of the agreement, the northeastern region will come under Syrian government control for the first time. This region had been governed autonomously by the Kurdish-led administration since 2012, when the civil war began.

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa Reaches Agreement with the Kurds
The Syrian government has reached an agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-led group controlling the northeast of the country. The agreement aims to integrate the group into the national army and establish a nationwide ceasefire.

According to the agreement, by the end of this year, all public institutions in northeastern Syria – including borders, airports, and oil fields – will be placed under Syrian government control.

Additionally, the Kurdish language, which was banned under the Assad regime, will be taught in schools, and Kurdish national holidays will be officially recognized.

The text of the agreement emphasizes that all Syrians, regardless of their religion or ethnicity, will have the right to participate in the country’s new political process.

This agreement marks a major achievement for Syria’s interim president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, who has been negotiating with the SDF to consolidate government control over the country.

Rebel groups supported by Turkey, now part of the Syrian army, had been engaged in near-daily clashes with the SDF since the fall of the Assad regime. It is expected that these clashes will cease following the announcement of the agreement.

After the agreement was announced, people took to the streets in Raqqa and Damascus to celebrate.

The deal was signed after the Syrian Ministry of Defense declared the conclusion of military operations against Assad loyalists. The fighting began when pro-Assad forces launched a coordinated attack on Syrian security forces last Thursday.

Ahmad al-Sharaa promised accountability for attacks on civilians, stating:
"We will hold fully accountable anyone responsible for the shedding of civilian blood, mistreatment of civilians, abuse of state authority, or exploitation of power for personal gain."

The Kurdish population remains skeptical due to years of repression under the Assad regime.

The Syrian government must also reach an agreement with the Druze community in the south, which has maintained its autonomy under the country’s new administration.

Additionally, there is a threat of Israeli military intervention in southern Syria. Israeli leaders have warned of military action if the central government harms the Druze community. However, Druze leaders have firmly rejected any Israeli interference in Syria.

On Monday night, following the signing of the agreement between Damascus and the SDF, Syrian state TV reported that the Israeli Air Force bombed military sites in the southern province of Daraa.
