The exercises, beginning Thursday morning, followed the inauguration of Taiwan's new president, Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing opposes.

The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) announced joint land, sea, and air drills in the Taiwan Strait and near Taiwan-controlled islands. Taiwan's defense ministry condemned the exercises and confirmed its forces were tracking Chinese military movements.

The presidential office criticized China's actions as threats to Taiwan's democracy and regional stability but reassured citizens of the island's security. Taiwanese officials noted the drills were expected and that they had comprehensive knowledge of Chinese activities.

Despite the tension, life in Taiwan remains calm, with the stock index rising slightly. Although the exercise will last only two days, the scale of the exercise is large compared to previous ones as it involves Taiwan's remote islands.
