Central Texas is grappling with one of the most devastating floods in recent decades. In the town of Kerrville, dozens have died, many remain missing, and search and rescue operations are now entering their fourth day.

According to CNN, the death toll from the powerful flood in Texas has risen to 80 people, including 28 children. An additional 10 girls from the Camp Mystic summer retreat are still unaccounted for.

The disaster struck early Friday morning when twice as much rain as forecasted fell, causing the Guadalupe River — which runs through Kerrville — to swell into a deadly torrent within minutes. 68 of the confirmed deaths occurred in this town alone.

Rescue teams have evacuated hundreds and saved more than 850 people, some of whom were found clinging to trees to avoid being swept away by the floodwaters.

Aerial search efforts are underway using helicopters, drones, and other specialized equipment. Rescuers face difficult conditions including mud, debris, heat, and even snake encounters.

Texas Department of Public Safety chief Freeman Martin warned that the death toll could rise further as the waters recede and new areas become accessible to search crews.
