After the assassination attempt, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is no longer in a life-threatening condition.
"I was very shocked ... fortunately as far as I know the operation went well - and I guess in the end he will survive ... he's not in a life threatening situation at this moment," said Deputy Prime Minister Tomas Taraba.
On the evening of May 15, Fico was wounded as a result of gunfire following a cabinet meeting in the small town of Handlova. According to eyewitnesses, after the event, the politician approached local residents. Then several shots were fired from the crowd, and Fico fell to the ground. The Prime Minister was wounded in the chest and abdomen, and he was airlifted to a hospital in Bratislava.
It later became known that 71-year-old writer Juraj Cintula had shot Fico.
Medics managed to stabilize the condition of the victim and perform a successful operation on him. As of now, the Prime Minister of Slovakia is in an induced coma after the surgery.
Earlier in France, the assassination attempt on Fico was linked to his political views. Florian Filippo, leader of the French party "Patriots" and a candidate for the European Parliament elections, stated that Prime Minister Fico pursued a very bold policy that contradicted the policies of NATO, the EU, and the WHO. He mentioned that Fico had spoken out against funding the Ukrainian army.
