The Taliban's acting Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Abdul Latif Mansour, said that the current Afghan government is ready to discuss the Amu Darya water problem in order to address the concerns of neighboring countries. Tolo News reports this.

"Those who are raising concerns should work on the agreement, but Afghanistan does not have a water contract with anyone. We also have not entered into any agreement on this matter. If the deal is broken, we will definitely take action," Abdul Latif Mansour said.

Three days earlier, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev expressed concern about the construction of the Koshtepa canal. According to him, the launch of the canal could radically change the water balance in Central Asia.

However, several economists and water experts have also stressed the need for construction of dams and efficient use of water resources in various parts of the country due to the current drought crisis.

“We have every right to use the Amu Darya water. This right is granted to Afghanistan by international conventions, and our state owns 27-30% of the Amu Darya water,” said water expert Najibullah Sadid.

“We expected there might be water disputes in the area. Because although we are the source of water in the region and do not consume this water, other countries see it as a water resource,” says Afghan economist Sayed Mansour.
