A series of events are being held in Turkey on 10 November to mark the 85th anniversary of the death of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey.

On this day in 1938, Turkey lost its first president and founder of the Republic. Since then, every year on 10 November at 09.05 (the exact time of Atatürk's death), a minute of silence is declared in the country.

Atatürk led the national revolutionary movement, establishing a new state and introducing a series of major political, social and cultural reforms.

As Chairman of the Grand National Assembly (Parliament) and then President of the Republic, he enjoyed unequivocal authority and respect both in Turkey and abroad.

Today, an official ceremony is being held at the Anıtkabyr Mausoleum in Ankara to mark the anniversary of the death of the outstanding statesman.
