U.S. President Donald Trump has once again announced plans to impose tariffs on the European Union (EU), China, Canada, and Mexico. In his statements, he emphasized the need for fair trade and efforts to combat the flow of illegal migrants and fentanyl, which is reportedly trafficked from China through Mexico and Canada.

Trump is considering 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico and 10% tariffs on imports from China. “The European Union is treating us very unfairly. Tariffs are the only way to ensure justice,” the president stated.

He set February 1 as the deadline for deciding on the tariffs. Additionally, he signed a memorandum requiring federal agencies to conduct an analysis of key issues by April 1, including trade deficits, unfair practices, and currency manipulation, and propose measures such as a “global additional tariff.”

White House trade advisor Peter Navarro added that the tariffs are being considered as a tool to address the fentanyl overdose crisis, which claims the lives of 300 Americans daily.

Mexico and Canada have expressed their readiness for dialogue. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stressed that the USMCA trade agreement will not be renegotiated until 2026 but affirmed Mexico’s willingness to respond to U.S. actions.

The escalation of tariff policies underscores Trump’s desire to renegotiate trade terms with key partners and gain greater control over imports and exports.
