Trump is putting pressure on Iran again

Donald Trump is returning to the strategy of "maximum pressure" on Iran. The US President signed a memorandum mandating that Iran's oil exports be reduced to zero, which should weaken Tehran's economy and prevent it from developing its nuclear program.

The memorandum contains an order from the US Treasury Department and the US State Department to intensify sanctions and increase pressure on Iranian oil buyers. According to Trump, Biden's policy allowed Tehran to restore oil exports, allegedly financing the development of nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, China, the largest buyer of Iranian oil, refuses to recognize US sanctions and is building alternative financial schemes, bypassing dollar payments.

Trump instructed the US ambassador to the UN to persuade allies to restore international sanctions against Iran. However, such attempts failed in 2020. In turn, Great Britain, France, and Germany stated they are ready to withdraw sanctions if Tehran continues to increase uranium enrichment levels.

Iran categorically denies the accusations and calls the new sanctions illegal. Experts warn that tightening restrictions could lead to increased tensions in the Middle East and fluctuations in oil prices.
