Trump maintains sanctions pressure on Russia
World
US President Donald Trump has extended for another year the sanctions imposed on Russia over Crimea and the situation in Ukraine. The decision was published in the US Federal Register.
The measures include restrictions introduced in 2014, 2018, and 2022. The document states that the actions covered by the executive orders continue to pose an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the national security and foreign policy of the United States. Accordingly, the state of emergency regime has been prolonged for one year.
The regime was first introduced on March 6, 2014, by then-President Barack Obama. It allows for the freezing of assets of individuals and entities deemed responsible for undermining democratic processes in Ukraine and threatening its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Since then, the state of emergency has been repeatedly extended by successive administrations. The latest decision comes amid ongoing trilateral talks on Ukraine.
