Trump Seeks to Rename Pentagon as the “Department of War”
World
U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing to sign an executive order on Friday to begin the process of renaming the Department of Defense as the Department of War, U.S. media reported citing White House officials.
According to a draft document, “restoring the name Department of War will focus the agency on our national interests and send a signal to adversaries that America is ready to wage war to protect them.”
However, it remains unclear whether the president can unilaterally implement the change. The Department of Defense was established by Congress in 1789, and altering its name requires legislation.
The Washington Post notes that the administration may try to bypass this requirement by introducing “Department of War” as an alternative name, allowing the Pentagon and its leadership to use it in official correspondence, public messaging, and ceremonial events.
Renaming would also entail significant costs, as the Pentagon’s official emblems appear on hundreds of facilities and government buildings worldwide.
