During a meeting with journalists, U.S. President Donald Trump said: "Zelensky wants to be a NATO member, but he will never be a NATO member. He understands that."
While speaking with reporters, the U.S. president expressed confidence that Putin would fulfill his promise to Trump. "I want to make sure he follows through. I think he will do what he told me, and I believe he will now fulfill his part of the deal," Trump said on Monday, March 31, during a press briefing at the White House.
At the same time, Trump emphasized that he was ready to increase economic pressure on Russia if necessary. "I don't want to impose secondary tariffs on (Vladimir Putin's) oil, but if I believe he is not doing his job, I would do it."
Additionally, the U.S. leader commented on the agreement with Kyiv regarding the extraction of mineral resources. Earlier, he had accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of attempting to derail the deal.
"I haven't spoken with Ukraine yet, but I heard through you (journalists) that they are now saying: 'I will only agree to this deal if we join NATO or something like that.' First of all, this has never been discussed. Long before the deal, Putin and Russia stated that Ukraine would not join NATO," Trump said.
On the same day, Trump accused Zelensky of trying to withdraw from the rare-earth metals agreement between Washington and Kyiv during a press interaction.
"If he tries to pull out of this deal, he will face big, very big problems," Reuters quoted Trump as saying.
The U.S. president added: "Zelensky wants to be a NATO member, but he will never be a NATO member. He understands that."
