U.S. President Donald Trump said he held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in which the leaders discussed the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and broader international developments.
According to Donald Trump, the conflict in Ukraine was the central topic of the discussion. He described the war as a prolonged and seemingly endless battle.
“We talked about Ukraine, which has become an endless fight,” Trump said, adding that there appears to be “tremendous hatred” between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy, making it difficult for the sides to reach an agreement.
Trump also said the situation in the Middle East was discussed during the call. According to him, Putin expressed a willingness to help address developments in the region.
The U.S. president noted that he told the Russian leader that ending the war in Ukraine would be more beneficial. “You could be more helpful if you ended the war in Ukraine,” Trump said, adding that overall the conversation was “very good.”
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed that the call took place and said Trump initiated it to discuss “a number of extremely important issues related to the current international situation.”
According to Ushakov, particular attention during the conversation was given to the conflict involving Iran and to ongoing trilateral talks with the participation of U.S. representatives regarding a settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. He described the discussion as “very substantive.”
