Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, has suspended his presidential campaign. This was announced by DeSantis himself in a video posted on his social media page X.
In the Iowa caucuses on 15 January, DeSantis came in second with 21% of the vote, while Trump received 51% of the vote. The politician cancelled scheduled interviews on Saturday.
DeSantis was considered Donald Trump's main opponent for the Republican nomination in 2023. The politician officially launched his candidacy on 24 May, after which he only lost popularity: DeSantis was criticised for being unnatural in public and unwilling to attack Trump.
Former President Donald Trump is the favourite in the Republican primaries. He won the caucuses in Iowa by a wide margin and leads in New Hampshire in opinion polls.
Earlier, another Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy withdrew his candidacy and expressed his willingness to support Donald Trump.
Donald Trump's only rival remains Republican Nikki Haley. Unlike Trump, Haley is in favour of increasing and accelerating military aid to Ukraine.
