Turkey is building barriers on the border with Greece
World
As part of new national security measures, Turkey has begun constructing walls and barriers along its western border with Greece, Kazinform reports.
This decision is considered a significant step in strengthening the country's border control policy. The total length of the new barrier in western Turkey will be 8.5 kilometers.
These measures aim to enhance control over migration flows and combat illegal immigration. The construction of walls and barriers is expected to improve security in the region and reduce risks associated with unauthorized border crossings. This project comes in response to a growing number of illegal border crossing attempts due to economic and political changes in neighboring countries.
Turkish authorities emphasize that the new structure will also play a crucial role in fighting smuggling and other illegal activities. The mayor of Edirne, Yunus Sezer, stated that in September last year, 325 kilometers of border roads were completed and improved. This year, with the support of Turkey’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Ministry of National Defense, the construction of optical-electronic surveillance towers and other technical equipment will continue.
— For the first time this year, we are implementing physical security measures on the western border, including the construction of walls and barriers. Previously, there were only patrol routes. Now that the patrol roads are completed, we will build a certain number of walls and barriers, similar to the experience on the country’s eastern border, — experts noted.
According to analysts, the construction of fences and barriers highlights Turkey’s increasing focus on security and border control.
It is worth noting that security measures, including the construction of a concrete wall and the digging of trenches, are also ongoing in Turkey’s Van province on the border with Iran.
