US and China to hold trade talks in Switzerland
World
For the first time since the start of the tariff war, representatives of the US and China will sit down at the negotiating table. A personal meeting can be a turning point in the tense economic relations between the two powers.
The US and China agreed to hold personal trade talks in Switzerland at the end of this week. This will be the first meeting of high-ranking representatives of the two countries since the escalation of the tariff war caused by the new tariffs introduced by US President Donald Trump in April.
The American delegation will be headed by Finance Minister Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jason Greer. China will be represented by Vice Prime Minister He Lifeng. According to Bessent, the talks will not be about a large-scale deal, but about "de-escalation as the first step towards further progress."
Trade tensions escalated sharply after Washington imposed a 145% tariff on Chinese goods. Beijing responded symmetrically - with 125% duties, while maintaining some exceptions to minimize damage. This has already had a noticeable impact on the economies of both countries.
