The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has fined the Football Association of Uzbekistan $340,000 for violating advertising regulations during an official match.
According to the AFC’s official website, the disciplinary committee imposed the penalty following the Uzbekistan vs. Qatar game.
The fine was issued after players from the Uzbekistan national team were presented with BYD cars as rewards for their successful performance and qualification for the World Cup.
Under AFC regulations, brands that are not official sponsors of the tournament cannot be displayed or promoted during official matches or events. The incident was therefore deemed a breach of the confederation’s commercial and advertising rules.
The $340,000 fine must be paid within the timeframe set by the AFC.
The gesture of gifting cars had previously drawn significant public attention and sparked debate across Uzbekistan’s sports community and media.
