Young Parliamentarians Discussed the Role of Parliaments in Achieving the SDGs

On September 5, a special open session titled “Parliamentary Engagement in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals” was held as part of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s 12th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians. Young parliamentarians from different countries, representatives of international organizations and experts discussed the role and potential of legislatures in advancing the SDGs at the national level.
The session was opened by Tanzila Narbaeva, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis and Co-Chair of the Parliamentary Commission on Monitoring the Implementation of the National Goals and Targets in the Field of Sustainable Development through 2030.
The discussion highlighted Uzbekistan’s progress in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals across social, economic, environmental and institutional areas. In particular, the poverty rate fell from 17% to 5.8% in 2021–2025. The unemployment rate declined from 10.5% to 5.1% in 2020–2025, while the share of young people covered by higher education increased from 18.7% to 47.7%.
Participants emphasized the role of parliaments in creating conditions for progress toward the SDGs. Key areas included improving the legislative framework, parliamentary oversight of government programmes, setting budget priorities and expanding citizens’ participation in decision-making, particularly among young people.
Particular attention was given to two UN General Assembly resolutions adopted at Uzbekistan’s initiative: “Strengthening the role of parliaments in accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals” and “Strengthening the role of parliaments in accelerating social development.”
The session also addressed the contribution of young parliamentarians to advancing the SDGs, mechanisms for cooperation between parliaments and young people, and ways to expand youth participation in political and social processes. Inter-parliamentary cooperation aimed at accelerating progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals was another focus of the discussion.
The session concluded with proposals to support initiatives by young parliamentarians, exchange best practices and apply effective parliamentary mechanisms to advance the implementation of the SDGs.
