After more than 20 years of operation, Microsoft is finally closing Skype. Users are invited to join Teams.

Microsoft closed Skype
On May 5, 2025, Microsoft officially discontinued Skype - one of the most popular messengers in the early 2000s. Users were notified in advance of the closure and were given the opportunity to save correspondence, as well as transfer their accounts and contacts to the Microsoft Teams corporate platform.

Skype was created in 2003 by Estonian developers together with Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Fries - former employees of the Swedish Tele2. In 2011, Microsoft acquired the messenger for $8.5 billion, making it part of its ecosystem.

Since then, Skype has gradually lost its popularity, giving way to more modern solutions. Now its users will be automatically transferred to Microsoft Teams - a universal platform for communication and collaboration.
