16 Tons of "Grey" Imports Worth Two Billion Soums Seized in Fergana

Uzbekistan

The Customs Service of Uzbekistan has dealt another significant blow to the shadow economy and illicit supply networks. A local company's attempt to disguise high-value foreign commodities as a completely different, low-cost shipment fell apart during the final clearance stage. A meticulous inspection at a border post elevated a routine screening into a major anti-smuggling operation. This underground import channel led straight from China's industrial hubs, with the financial stakes running into the billions.

Officers at the "Kokand" post of the Fergana Regional Customs Department, in cooperation with the Anti-Smuggling Division, foiled an illegal attempt to import a large shipment of goods from China. A local firm sought to clear 25 tons of cargo, documented as 14 types of products, under the customs regime of free circulation.

However, an inspection conducted in the presence of the company’s representative revealed that nearly 16 tons of goods, spanning seven distinct categories, were either completely omitted from the declaration or listed under false classifications. The value of this undeclared cargo exceeded 2 billion soums. The entire illegal consignment has been seized, and a pre-investigation inquiry is currently underway. Earlier, similar seizures involving undocumented batches of electronic cigarettes and acoustic systems took place at the "Sergeli" customs post.
