The Morning Midas, which had been burning in the Pacific Ocean for three weeks, sank on June 23 at a depth of about 5,000 meters. Bloomberg reports this, citing the Zodiac Maritime company.
According to the ship owner, the fire started in early June on the deck where electric vehicles were located - it was there that smoke was first noticed. There were about 3 thousand cars on board, including 800 electric cars. The ship carried products from several automakers, including Chery Automobile Co. and Great Wall Motor Co.
Due to a severe fire and unfavorable weather conditions, the ship sustained critical damage, began to gain water, and eventually sank approximately 360 nautical miles (580 km) from the nearest shore.
The extinguishing operation was complicated by the remoteness from land: the second of the three specialized firefighters arrived only on June 15th - a week after the incident began.
All 22 crew members were successfully evacuated with the assistance of the US Coast Guard.
