Street protests in Iran have entered their ninth day: human rights groups report at least 35 people killed and over 1,200 arrested. Demonstrations have spread across dozens of cities and university campuses.
According to Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) and the HRANA network, protests have occurred in at least 88 cities and 27 out of 31 Iranian provinces. At least 35 people have died in clashes, and over 1,200 protesters have been detained.
Human rights organizations report that security forces have used violence, particularly in smaller towns. Harsh measures have sparked a new wave of protests in major cities, including Tehran and Mashhad.
Students from at least 17 universities have joined the protests. According to student media, law enforcement has conducted raids on campus grounds.
The current protests are considered the largest since 2022, when the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after being detained by the “morality police” sparked nationwide outrage.
Earlier, state media reported the death of a 21-year-old Basij member in Kuhdasht. According to reports, security forces used weapons to disperse protesters, and demonstrators threw stones in response, which may have led to the member’s death.
On January 5, Iran’s judiciary officially announced that no leniency will be shown toward those detained.
