A potential earthquake in Istanbul and the surrounding Marmara Sea region could result in the deaths of nearly 4 million people. This was reported by Turkey's leading seismologist, Naji Gurur. According to him, a strong earthquake in Istanbul poses a major threat to the city's 16 million residents.

Gurur emphasized that the majority of the city's buildings are not earthquake-resistant. "Even the most prestigious institutions in Istanbul emphasize that more than 60% of the buildings in the city are not resistant to earthquakes. If an earthquake occurs in the Marmara Sea region, all of Turkey will be affected," he said.

Seismologists have repeatedly warned that a powerful earthquake, with a magnitude of 7 or higher, may occur in the Istanbul area. They believe that such an earthquake could destroy around 90,000 buildings, leaving over 260,000 buildings uninhabitable. Additionally, 4.5 million people would be in need of temporary housing.

For this reason, seismologists stress the need for new measures in the high-risk earthquake zones of Istanbul and the urgent need for preparedness.
