Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet in Ankara to discuss military cooperation, including the deployment of Turkish air bases in Syria and the preparation of a new Syrian army.
On Tuesday, February 4, Ankara will host key talks between Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to Reuters sources, the parties intend to discuss a joint defense pact, which may include the creation of Turkish air bases in central Syria and training of Syrian armed forces with the support of Ankara.
Turkey, a member of NATO, has been supporting the Syrian opposition in the fight against Bashar al-Assad, who was overthrown in December. Now Ankara is trying to consolidate its influence in the region by filling the vacuum left by the weakening of Iran's positions. This could lead to tension in relations with the Arab states of the Gulf and put Israel in a difficult position.
According to sources, the possibility of creating two Turkish military bases in the strategically important Badia region, as well as the use of Syria's airspace by Turkey is being discussed. No official comments have been received from the Turkish presidential administration and the Syrian defense ministry.
