The Aughinish alumina plant in Ireland, owned by Oleg Deripaska’s company “Rusal,” supplies raw materials to Russian defense enterprises, according to an investigation by “Vazhnie Istorii.”

Alumina from Ireland Flows into Russian Missile Production
Alumina is a key raw material for aluminum production, which is required for military equipment. The raw bauxite processed at Aughinish is mined at Rusal-owned deposits in Guinea, forming the company’s critical resource base.

According to the investigation, about 50% of the alumina produced at Aughinish in 2024 was delivered to Russian plants associated with Rusal, worth approximately $400 million.

The aluminum is then routed through ASK, which supplies materials to enterprises fulfilling state defense contracts. Clients include the Arzamas Instrument-Building Plant (producing the X-101 cruise missile) and the Votkinsk Plant (producing the Iskander-M ballistic missile).

Alexander Danilyuk, a researcher at London’s Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), noted that even technically legal supplies reveal gaps in European sanctions oversight.
