Austria seeking to end Russian gas import contract

Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler said that the Austrian government needs to develop a plan to withdraw from Russian gas supply agreements concluded by Austrian energy concern OMV.
"We must prepare to exit OMV's long-term contracts," the politician said.
In her opinion, co-operation with Russia and commitments to supply large volumes of natural gas were one of the reasons why the share of Russian gas in Austria's energy sector is so high.
In January, representatives of the Austrian company OMV warned about a possible termination of Russian gas supplies via Ukraine. According to the company, in 2023 Gazprom fulfilled all gas supply obligations set out in its long-term contract until 2040.
