Azerbaijan and Russia plan to resume a number of direct flights suspended after the Azerbaijan Airlines crash in December 2024. The expected restoration of air services is among the key outcomes of recent foreign ministers' talks and reflects continued efforts to normalise bilateral relations.
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov announced that restrictions introduced after the AZAL passenger aircraft disaster would soon be lifted on several routes. He also said that issues arising from the crash, including compensation, have been resolved.
During the talks, the two sides signed a 2026–2027 inter-ministerial consultation plan and discussed expanding cooperation in trade, transport, and regional connectivity.
Particular attention was given to the development of the North–South International Transport Corridor, the regional 3+3 platform, and broader economic cooperation. According to Bayramov, bilateral trade reached approximately $4.9 billion in 2025, an increase of 2.5% compared with the previous year.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that both countries intend to fully realise the potential of their allied partnership and make up for the slowdown in bilateral relations seen over recent months.
