White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt will leave her post at the end of August, President Donald Trump announced. After leaving the White House, she will continue working with Trump as an outside adviser and remain an influential voice within the Republican Party.
Trump described Leavitt as one of his most trusted aides and said he understood and respected her decision to spend more time with her family and young children. He said she would become one of his top outside advisers after leaving the administration.
Leavitt became White House press secretary in January 2025 at the age of 27, making her the youngest person ever to hold the position in US history. She is now 28. Before joining the White House, she served as press secretary for Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
In her statement, Leavitt described serving as press secretary as “the honor and adventure of a lifetime.” She said balancing one of the world’s most demanding jobs with raising a newborn had been the most intense and challenging, but also the happiest, period of her life.
During her tenure, Leavitt became one of the most prominent figures associated with the MAGA movement. Her confrontational approach to interactions with some members of the media frequently drew criticism, while Trump’s supporters praised her for consistently defending the president and his policies.
The White House has not announced who will replace Leavitt as Trump’s chief press representative. She is the second-longest-serving press secretary across Trump’s two administrations, behind only Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
