NASA Space Apps Challenge is the world&rsquo;s largest annual global hackathon, bringing participants together to tackle real-world challenges in science and space exploration using open data provided by NASA and its partners. In 2026, the event will take place across more than 450 in-person and virtual Local Events worldwide. Participants can combine skills in programming, engineering, design, data analysis, scientific research and other fields. Challenges are developed by NASA subject-matter experts and cover areas including astrophysics, space exploration, software development, agriculture and data applications. The 2026 edition will draw on open data from NASA and 17 Space Agency Partners, including the European Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the Canadian Space Agency and the Turkish Space Agency. Following the hackathon, submitted projects are evaluated by experts, with 10 Global Winners selected across different award categories. The NASA International Space Apps Challenge will return to Tashkent in 2026, marking the fifth time the Uzbek capital has hosted the global hackathon. The event is scheduled for November 14–15 and is open to participants regardless of age, professional background or level of experience.

Estonia’s parliament, the Riigikogu, elected Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise as the country’s new president on September 2. She secured 71 of 101 votes in a secret ballot, exceeding the 68 votes required for election.

Since 1989, our country&#39;s population has nearly doubled, and the economy has doubled over the past eight years. These changes have increased the need for accurate and reliable data on the composition of the population, its places of residence, land resources, agriculture, and food sources. The presentation presented information on the results of this year&#39;s population and agricultural census. According to preliminary results, the permanent population of our country is 39,047,000 people. The places of residence and social status of 810,600 people who were not reflected in the current records have been clarified. A comparison with current data showed that the population of Jizzakh Region was down 2.7 percent, Namangan Region by 1.3 percent, Surkhandarya Region by 0.9 percent, and Kashkadarya Region by 0.7 percent. The Bukhara Region remained virtually unchanged, while the remaining regions saw higher figures. Specifically, the population of Tashkent District was 1.6 times higher than previously reported, while Andijan City saw a 15.8 percent decrease. Based on the agricultural census, the boundaries and categories of 985,500 hectares of previously unrecorded land were clarified. Of this, 789,500 hectares are arable land, 14,100 hectares are greenhouses, 75,300 hectares are orchards, 21,400 hectares are vineyards, and 85,000 hectares are fish ponds. Thanks to digitalization of processes, the census costs did not exceed 1,500 soums per capita. This is 15 times lower than in the CIS countries. Online census coverage was 82.3 percent. All processes were completed within 15 days, making Uzbekistan the second fastest census country in the world. Based on the census results, continuously updated statistical registers of the population and agriculture will be compiled. One hundred indicators related to socio-economic development programs and 50 indicators related to agriculture and sown area will be updated. Furthermore, national accounts indicators for 2017&ndash;2025 will be revalued. The presentation focused on the full statistical accounting of economic activity. Currently, the non-observed economy accounts for 23 percent, or 246 trillion soums. In agriculture, this sector accounts for 60 percent of total turnover. The income of 6.5 million people out of 15.2 million employed people, or 42 percent, is not fully reflected in official records. Many registered small and medium-sized businesses are either inactive or have ceased operations. This creates an unhealthy competitive environment for companies that operate conscientiously and fully meet their tax obligations. One in every 4-5 soums of economic turnover remains outside the purview of official statistics. Streamlining this activity will generate additional budget revenues amounting to tens of trillions of soums and further reduce the tax burden. In this regard, a proposal to conduct a business census from October 15 to November 30 of this year was approved. This will include an inventory of all economic entities operating in the country, clarifying their status, composition, and distribution across economic sectors. Statistical registers of enterprises and organizations will be updated, and a reliable basis for conducting sample surveys will be created. Plans for the development of the national statistical system through 2030 were also reviewed. Plans call for a 20 percent reduction in the reporting burden on entrepreneurs, a 1.7-fold increase in the number of administrative and alternative data sources, and a 20 percent reduction in data processing time and a 25 percent reduction in costs. To develop a unified approach to data management, it is proposed to establish a Data Management Commission with the participation of ministries and agencies. By December 1 of this year, the commission will conduct a full inventory of data management systems in government agencies and organizations and approve an action plan for their improvement by May 1, 2027. The National Data Platform is planned to be launched by July 1, 2027. It will ensure the integration of data into a unified system, improve its quality and security, and develop analytics and modern digital services. Furthermore, it is proposed to create a project office for open data and implement an &quot;Open Data Rating&quot; for government agencies. To expand training and research in statistics, a School of Data-Driven Management is planned. It will offer educational programs in data management, business analytics, artificial intelligence, data journalism, and visualization to representatives of government agencies, businesses, statistical agencies, the media, researchers, and students. The use of digital technologies in the national statistical system will also be expanded. By July 1, 2027, statistical data will be published in formats suitable for processing by artificial intelligence systems. AI agents will be introduced to enable the comparison of statistical indicators and their in-depth analysis. By the end of 2027, data on population, demography, agriculture, infrastructure, and regional development will be displayed on digital geospatial maps. Furthermore, the seventh round of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey is planned for 2027&ndash;2028, and the national statistical system&#39;s compliance with international standards and codes will be assessed with the participation of the International Monetary Fund. The presentation also reviewed the draft national strategy &quot;Development of Statistics &ndash; 2030.&quot; Its priority areas include coordination of the statistical system and data quality assurance, the implementation of international standards and methodologies, digital transformation, the widespread use of administrative and alternative data sources, and the development of open statistics focused on user needs. The head of state emphasized that accurate, timely, and reliable statistics are essential for shaping public policy and making informed decisions on the development of regions and industries.
