At the 144th session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), held in Costa Navarina (Greece), an official decision was made to include boxing in the program of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles. More than 100 delegates supported this decision, which put an end to long discussions about the future of the sport at the Olympics.
Earlier, on March 18, at a press conference, the head of the IOC, Thomas Bach, said that the issue of including boxing would be put to a vote. Today, the delegates unanimously confirmed that this popular sport will remain in the Olympic program.
The IOC decided that the boxing competition in Los Angeles will be held under the auspices of the World Boxing organization. This means that the International Boxing Association (IBA) will no longer participate in organizing the Olympic fights. The committee has repeatedly criticized the IBA for its non-transparent leadership, financial machinations, and interference in refereeing.
The IOC did not include boxing in the Los Angeles-2028 program for a long time, as it was not confident in its management. The delegates' voting on March 20, 2025, definitively confirmed that boxing would remain in the program but would be held under the auspices of World Boxing, not the IBA.
The decision to include boxing in the program was supported by leading sports federations and national Olympic committees. Now, the official approval of the 2028 Olympics program has been completed, and boxers from around the world can prepare for the Games in Los Angeles.
