The Bulgarian Defense Minister announced that a new NATO military base will be built by 2025. According to him, the final decision on the location of the military base has not yet been made, and part of the funds necessary for its construction will be allocated by NATO.
A military base will be built in Bulgaria to house a multinational NATO battle group at a cost of more than 100 million levs (about $55 million). This was stated by the country's Minister of Defense Todor Tagarev at a meeting of the parliamentary commission on defense.
“The cost of building the necessary infrastructure - barracks, buildings for storing equipment, preparing a road network for a multinational NATO battle group will amount to more than 100 million leva. The end result should be a small [military] town. The base should be ready by 2025,” the minister said .
He added that the final decision on the location of the military base has not yet been made, and part of the funds necessary for its construction will be allocated by NATO.
Bulgaria has been a NATO member since 2004. It joined the Union as part of a large-scale expansion, while seven countries, including the Baltic states, joined NATO. The country is home to four US military bases, including two air bases. Up to 2.5 thousand American soldiers can be accommodated there at the same time.
In July this year, Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov called for the modernization of the Bulgarian Armed Forces. He announced that he would buy 16 F-16s and two attack ships.
“In addition, the number of NATO soldiers stationed in Bulgaria will be increased to 5 thousand,” the minister said.
