The US blocked the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, citing the absence of a Hamas condemnation in the text. Despite the support of 14 out of 15 Council members, the document was not adopted due to the American veto.

The US exercised its veto power and blocked the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution proposed on behalf of ten non-permanent members (E10 group) under the coordination of Slovenia. The document contained a call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and urgent humanitarian measures in the face of a sharp deterioration in the situation for civilians.

The project received support from 14 out of 15 members of the Security Council. Only the USA opposed it. US Permanent Representative to the UN, Dorothy Shi, explained that Washington deemed the document "unacceptable" due to the lack of any formulation condemning Hamas's actions.

"There should be no surprise that we opposed this project. We have clearly indicated that we will not support any initiative in which HAMAS is not condemned," Shi said.

Speaking on behalf of the E10 group, Slovenia's permanent representative, Samuel Jbogar, expressed regret over the blocking of the initiative.

The draft resolution was submitted on June 4. Among the countries that supported him were Algeria, Slovenia, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Panama, Pakistan, South Korea, Sierra Leone, and Somalia.
