Residential Areas Under Fire: Experts Point to Signs of War Crimes in Lebanon
World
Southern Lebanon is being transformed into a zone of total devastation. Satellite imagery and data analysis by BBC Verify confirm that the Israeli military is systematically destroying civilian infrastructure in border areas, following a harsh strategy of territorial "cleansing."
According to the investigation, more than 1,400 buildings have been completely destroyed since March 2 alone. Experts emphasize that this is merely the tip of the iceberg: due to limited access to strike sites and delays in satellite data updates, the true scale of the catastrophe is likely much higher. The systematic demolition of residential neighborhoods is linked to a direct order from Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz. On March 22, he ordered the acceleration of the destruction of homes near the border, openly describing it as applying the "Gaza model" to the Lebanese campaign against Hezbollah.
International human rights activists and legal scholars are already sounding the alarm. In comments to BBC Verify, international law experts stated that the targeted destruction of entire towns and villages, unjustified by direct military necessity, bears all the hallmarks of war crimes. While Israel frames its actions as a security measure, the global community is receiving mounting evidence that Lebanon's border zone is being intentionally turned into a lifeless buffer territory.
